What is poker?
Poker is a table casino card game that is traditionally played against other players. The object of the game is to have the best hand value among all players at the end of the round, or to be the last player still playing. Poker is one of the most popular casino card games today, with over 120 million players worldwide; there are approximately 60 million players in the United States alone!
Online poker has further expanded the game’s popularity by adding exciting video and live poker games, allowing you to experience the thrill of a casino from the comfort and convenience of your home. Who says you can’t be a poker pro in your pajamas?
A step-by-step guide on how to play poker
Step 1: Place your bet
Each player will be dealt 2 cards face down. Make an initial buy-in bet and review your hand. If you did not make the initial buy-in bet, you will have folded for that round and the game will continue as normal. Players usually go clockwise to the left of the dealer.
Step 2: Cards on the table
The dealer places 5 cards face down on the table in a row. Once buy-ins have been received from all players, the first 3 cards will be flipped. The game then proceeds clockwise, with each player deciding to raise, hold on, or fold. Each time it comes back to the dealer, another card is flipped over until all 5 cards on the table are visible.
Step 3: Move the joystick
Players can choose from 3 actions each round: hold on, raise, or fold.
Holding is when a player decides to keep the cards in their hand without making any additional bets. If all players choose to persist, the next card on the table is revealed and the round begins again. If all players hold on while all 5 cards are visible on the board, the hand is revealed and the result is calculated to determine who wins.
Step 4: Improve mobility
The raise action can be completed during any of your actions, thereby adding an additional bet to the pot, which must be matched by all other non-folding players after the bet is placed.
If a player cannot match the raise, or chooses not to match, then they must fold and exit the round. The raise amount must be at least the buy-in amount for the round and can be your current bonus amount. Putting all your money in triggers an all-in, which if matched means the player must put the entire pot into play.
Step 5: Fold and Move
One player eliminates themselves from the round. Folding will give up all the money the discarding player invested in that round. This can happen because of a weak hand or a choice that doesn’t match other players’ raises. Folding can be done at any time during the game, including before the initial bet is made. Study the cards on the table and your opponent’s betting behavior to determine when it’s a good idea to fold.
Step 6: Win
After all the cards have been turned over, all remaining players reveal their cards, and the winner is determined based on whose card is the strongest. The final raise can be made before the reveal, with the player with the best hand winning the pot. If all but one player has folded before all cards are revealed, the last player standing automatically wins. Win money and start playing again.

Top 5 Poker Tips
- High cards are good: If you start with a face card (J, Q, K, A) then you have the potential to have a good game.
- Have a plan for each hand: If you see the potential for higher pair value, stick with it as a goal.
- Don’t expect a high card to win: even a pair of 2s can beat a high card, an ace.
- Pace yourself when raising: If you raise too quickly, you may alert other players to a good hand.
- Pay attention to the behavior of other players: if someone is a little too eager to raise, it may be more advantageous to fold than to try to match.
Types of Poker
Texas holdem poker
One of the most popular poker games in land-based and online casinos. Texas Hold’em Poker has 5 tables and 2 hands, for a total of 7 cards. After each round the cards on the table are turned over until all 5 cards are visible and the final result is reached.
Omaha
A popular variation of the standard Texas Hold’em rule set, but with a total of 9 cards. The number of cards on the table in each game is still 5, but the player’s hand increases to 4. Extra cards bring extra excitement, as more cards mean more potential matches and a higher likelihood of achieving higher matches, such as a straight flush and a royal flush.
video poker
Video poker uses only 5 cards in total, simplifying the poker experience. The only cards in the game are the 5 cards on the table, which start each game face down. After the bet is placed, the cards are flipped and any pairs are retained until the next flip. The remaining unpaired cards are flipped and flipped again, with bonuses paid for any successful matches.
What is the biggest difference between online casino poker and land-based casino poker?
- Bet amounts: Poker tables at land-based casinos can be crowded with high-stakes veteran players who win or lose large sums of money on a single hand. This can lead to massive buy-ins and scare new players away. Online poker lowers the buy-in amount per game so you can play and learn within a budget; not the budget of a top player.
- Convenience: Land casino poker is played in a real casino and has all the boring rules that come with it. Online casinos allow you to enjoy the best games without leaving home. Sit back, relax and have fun!
- Speed: Land Casino Poker is very similar to many land casino games in that it is fast paced and determined by the speed of the dealer. Online poker puts the speed of the game into the hands of the player, which means you have more time to familiarize yourself with the rules and adjust to your own pace.
